We often talk about the passion or the hobby that will be the base for your business, but what you really should find is the one thing that you want to do for the rest of your life. Let me help you find what to base a business on.
What To Base a Business On?
While many business are based on a product or service, where do you start with all of this? Unless you have a strong idea or product concept, finding out what to base your business on can be difficult.
A hobby or a passion of yours can definitely be a good base for a business for you will know everything about it or have at least plenty of interest to research the inns and outs of it.
Most businesses out there are usually based upon a service or a physical product that can be sold either through your own store or that of others. Products can also be something that comes later with your business.
So what do you start with? What do you base your business on?
I’ve spoken about it before here on this website, but I will say it again. If you want to become your own online boss you could start with the creation of content around a passion you have. Mind you, a true passion will work better than just some side hobby you got, but either way works.
Say for example, your hobby is fishing Salmon. You could make fishing in general or fishing Salmon your passion and the base for your business.
You can now start creating your content around this subject. For example you could register a domain and start a website about your passion and start writing posts with various topics.
That what you want to do is offer free value to your audience. For example you could write about the best lures for Salmon fishing. You could write tutorials on how to fish with different fishing poles, lures and techniques.
You could also write reviews on different products and tools you would use, such as the boots you use to stand in the middle of the river, the clothing to protect yourself from weather, the lures, the fishing pole, the line and so much more.
All this info can fill up an entire website with blog posts. You could create Youtube video’s that are linking with these. You could start a Vlog on Youtube or social media. You could start a weekly podcast talking about all the important stuff or interviewing other pro and amateur people.
You can grow a social media following for different platforms and produce content both for these platforms and pushing them to your website.
All this valuable information you create will generate a lot of traffic when done right. There is some technology needed to start doing this and there are some SEO techniques to learn to do it right from the start off.
The traffic generated from all of this, can be monetized through affiliate marketing, email marketing and possibly future product sales. As a matter of fact, when you got traffic, there are many more ways to go about to monetize your content.
The many valuable pieces of information through all your platforms can be put into an eBook that you can sell on Amazon as well. You could run livestreams for Q&A or themed topics to discuss with the audience on the many livestreaming platforms available.
Perhaps at some point you find that there is a missing product in the market that you could develop. If you are a handy man you could design and create it all by yourself or you could step up to a product development company and produce a product together with them. This can be yet another thing to sell.
I haven’t even mentioned merchandise yet, which is also a way to monetize your business as is the possibility to money-gate your content (I am no big fan of money-gating content however).
The possibilities to grow your business are endless. As you can see, starting a business based upon what your passion is, is truly possible.
Finding Your True Passion
Finding your true passion can be super easy or super hard, depending on how big a fan you are of something in life and how well you know yourself.
Knowing yourself is a huge key in finding your true passion. If you find yourself being mediocre at best at everything you spike an interest for, you need to take a close look at yourself for the coming time and figure out what makes you tick in life.
What are the things you are slightly interested in? What are the things you reckon you are best at? What are the weaker ones?
This is basic stuff if you ever have been applying for jobs in your life, written your own CV or had job interviews where they asked you to enlighten the good and bad about yourself. No easy job however, and I never really like to say the bad stuff about myself on such interview in case they use it against me.
A great way to figure out stuff is by filling out a so called IKIGAI. It is a Japanese concept that just means “A Reason For Being” and it is a technique to find out what you love vs what you can make money with in this world. It really can give a great insight in yourself, but if that is not enough, I got more tips for you.
You create a spreadsheet or on a piece of paper you make a header with four columns.
You name them:
- What You Love
- What You Are Good At
- What The World Needs
- What You Can Make Money With
Below these columns you write what comes to mind. Take your time to write them all down, even if it takes you a couple of days or weeks.
When you feel everything you want is on paper, it is now time to look at them all and see which ones are overlapping each other naturally. Also you should look at each possibility and look within your heart which one calls for your vocation or feels best in your heart.
Here’s the complete explanation (Youtube) of IKIGAI on TedxYYC:
As a special bonus, I have attached the short version of my IKIGAI here for you to download and look at. Use it to create your own IKIGAI.
Ask A Question To Each Of Your Nearest
While you could write your nearest ones to write everything positive or negative about yourself, this will put a lot of unnecessary pressure on them. You are far better off keeping it really simple for them and yourself. Now you can change this question to your liking, but I used the following question:
“What is in your opinion the core value of me?”
Most people gave different answers. This gave me then a list of core values that I collected from all my family members and friends. Funny thing is that it were the same things that I had found through my IKIGAI earlier.
There are many resources for helping you find yourself and see what drives you. This is even for me still an ongoing thing, so don’t be ashamed if you cannot find your true passion yet.
Do note that you could use the “not having found yourself yet” thing as a theme for your content too. Make it rather a journey for knowledge that you share in your content creation. It might very well help others in finding themselves too with you.
Stopped By Near People
If there are people that are stopping you from doing what you love, you need to have a talk with those people. In most cases I believe that stop is within yourself. As long as you keep giving in on what others thing or say, you are not truly choosing yourself in life. It usually are the closest ones, especially parents and partner that might not believe in that what you feel is right is right for you.
Naturally, I understand that you care and love those that say this to you. You will need to sort out what it is that bothers those people and whether you can make them feel easier about things that make them feel insecure about your choices in life.
It will be about finding a balance that works for you between caring and loving the ones close to you, while also keeping yourself happy and making sure that others respect that.
If the passion you chose is the true passion for you, your vocation, nothing can really stop you anymore.
Work vs Hobby
Working a “normal job” can feel like a chore. Some people even feel this while they have their own business. I do believe in that if you got a job that is based upon your true passion, that work will no longer feel like work. A 10 hour job that you love is no longer work, but feels like you are executing your hobby or passion 24/7.
Even though your own business can offer more flexibility, you will quickly find out that you are essentially working more hours than ever before on establishing your business and on much different times of the day (although that is a preference).
If you chose a true passion, you chose something that you can do for a very long time because you enjoy it so much.
Not Sure Yet?
Even if you went with a passion or hobby that you currently love, but you aren’t sure yet you will love it forever, it is not going to matter. You can always switch things around when the current thing is not exactly what you want to do. Naturally it is best to have chosen one thing and keep a focus, but businesses can be sold or be put on hold.
There are also plenty of people that have many businesses running next to each other or that just love to have a lot of different stuff running at the same time (especially when those different things are in the same area of interest).
It really is no problem to change things up over time. We are all constantly changing and so will our interests. I enjoy talking about this sort of stuff. I love helping people finding what their true passion is and help them achieve their dreams.
