We all chat to some extent either through social media or through communication apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Skype. But did you know you can also make money online while chatting? I present you today the top ways to make money online chatting.
We Spend Much Time Chatting
Chatting has become a very normal thing for almost everybody that is active online. We chat through Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Telegram, Skype, Discord, VoipBuster, Google Hangouts and many more. We do this from our PC or through our own mobile phone. We are available at any time of the day and from wherever we are located.
Communication has always been a natural form for us humans, just that the usual conversation has shifted to a digital form entirely. It didn’t matter much for mobile phone companies, because now we perhaps do not talk as much on our phones anymore, it has been replaced by buying a lot of MB’s for data usage.
Wouldn’t it be great if we would actually put all that chatting to good use and earn some return on the ‘wasted’ time? Let’s explore the ways to make money with chatting.
Make Money Online, Chatting
I tried to find all the services and apps that offer you some form of payment for chatting, but I quickly saw that this was about adult content services that required you to be of the female gender and chat in the adult sector.
So while I could list them all here, I feel it is wrong to do so, nor can I guarantee that they actually pay out to those that want to perform adult chat services. If you are into that sort of thing, then I am sure you can figure it out yourself.
So I went looking for a more sustainable business approach. I found the following options to make money online with chatting:
- Become A Virtual Assistant
- Join A Work-From-Home Service Line
- Start Streaming
- Run Webinar’s
- Create Your Own Service Website
Become A Virtual Assistant
Believe it or not, but there are services out there that replace your all-round secretary assistant with a virtual one. You can literary take phone calls, answer emails, do administrative tasks, send invoices, do the books etc from home for both big and small companies out there.
Becoming a virtual assistant, means you can do all the tasks that any secretary job holds from the premises of your own home.
Does It Require Any Special Skills
Although some regulations would require you to have certain papers for doing the books, most other tasks do not require any form of papers or skills.
The general skills any secretary would need are:
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Being able to take phone calls
- Good telephone voice
- Understanding basic letter and email communication
Do You Need To Live in the US?
There are perhaps certain firms that require local workers, most VA services can be done from any place in the world, provided they have a stable power and internet connection.
How Much Money Can You Make Being A VA?
You can make anything from a side income to an unlimited amount of income. The question isn’t about how much money you can make, but how much time you can or want to work for the amount of money you can earn as a VA. As a starter at the job you will first have to prove yourself and so will earn less per hour than when you are well-established in this line of work.
You start out by taking smaller and lower paid jobs through services like Upwork, Freelancer and Taskrabbit. The more positive reviews you get, the higher a price you can ask for and the easier you will be rented by firms for jobs.
At a beginner rate you earn anything from 20 USD per hour and up, while professional VA’s are asking payment rates between 50-100 USD per hour. There are surely firms out there that pay more than that even. Do know that the sites such as Upwork, Freelancer and Taskrabbit also charge you a percentage and that taxes need to be filed by you
Join A Work-From-Home Service Line
Although you could easily link this with the virtual assistant jobs, I am actually referring to the many service hot lines and sales hot lines. There are service desks that use work-from-home people using special software that runs on your PC and a headset, with which you can take calls continuously when you sign yourself in.
I have seen the same system being used by an insurance company. The sellers use their computer at home and were living all over the world to answer my questions.
In some cases a landline is required for optimal and stable phone connections. The pay of this type of job is anywhere between 8 and 16 USD per hour.
I found a great resource on the internet for finding your next work-from-home service line job.
As an alternative to all this, you could also start streaming. If you think that streaming is only related to those that play video games, then you are wrong. Nowadays you can stream practically for anything you can think of, including doing your regular job or any form of creative business you can come up with.
Streaming sites such as Twitch and YouTube offer something for every type of hobby or business and are now also paying out to those that make their broadcast a business.
The important factor in having a successful stream, is your interaction with the public through chat and your video broadcast. Streaming services come with software to stream your content from your PC including your microphone and webcam. The audience is able to chat with a text chat on the side of the streaming video window. You choose whether you want to respond to the chat in chat yourself or whether you will answer them using your voice.
Twitch has been there mostly for the gamer streaming their game play to the internet. Each game has many streaming channels available at nearly every hour of the day with streamers from all over the world.
More recently Twitch has added the option to stream in a category named Creative and an even more recent category named IRL (In Real Life), but they also had already categories for things like comedy and talk shows.
In creative you will find people crafting all sorts of crafts. Say you like making creative things with clay, painting or crochet, then you could do so with a live audience.
Twitch is acquired by Amazon and has most likely because of it becomes more affiliate oriented. They released two different forms of partnership with Twitch as a broadcaster or streamer:
Becoming a partner is a lot harder than becoming an affiliate, but the big difference between the two is that partners can further monetize their channel. For partnership, you need to apply, while filling the requirements for affiliate partnership, you will get invited into the program.
My main story in this however is that you can in fact make money from streaming on Twitch and chatting with your audience while doing so.
On YouTube you could already upload video’s for as long as the existence of the platform. Many people made it their main job to publish video content to either attract their viewers to their website or make the viewers buy their products. As soon as YouTube offered publishers to reap money from advertisements, publishing video content on YouTube became an even bigger business model.
Although YouTube already started testing live streaming in 2009, it wasn’t until 2013 publicly available and only last year (2017) it has become part of the mobile app, opening up for so many more possibilities to stream live content. The audience types in chat and you can either type back or answer through speech captured in the stream.
You could also teach people certain skills you have acquired through something called a webinar. This is usually done through special streaming platforms that allow different levels of interaction between streamer and audience, such as a whiteboard, options to host tests, allowing audience to speak and document sharing capacity.
This comes a little in the direction of my next paragraph about creating your own service, but there are also platforms out there that allow you to host these type of classes or masterclasses without your own website.
You could technically also host these types of streams through Twitch and YouTube, but these platforms are less flexible as to the typical teaching environment.
Create Your Own Service Website
There are also chat box applications that can be implemented to any website out there. While this doesn’t seem like a business opportunity, you can easily create such service.
Say for example that you would offer coaching services, you could add chat to your website to let clients communicate with you and ask questions.
When you put this chat service behind a paywall, you are starting a viable business, like any other business model. I have actually seen a lot of (business) coaches using communication platforms like Skype.
There are many solutions to implement a live chat function to your website. For example mylivechat.com offers a free and premium version of a chat application that you can implement into your website with some simple code you add to your website.
If you happen to be on WordPress hosting there are many free and premium plugins available that offer the same functionality.
LiveChat is also an excellent sales tool for those selling products or offering a service. Even when the chat is offered free, it can be that the goal of the website is to generate sales.
There are many ways you can make money chatting and the top ones are live streaming via services like Twitch or YouTube as well as so called webinars where you can teach people something. You can also sell the chat as a type of coaching or consultancy service. If you are interested in work-from-home jobs, then perhaps becoming a support agent or a virtual assistant is a viable option.
