You will find the term Passive Income on most websites and it does sound very attractive, but does passive income actually exist?
Bored of 9 to 5 Jobs
Perhaps you and many other people with you, are fed up with having a regular job where they have to work from 9 am to 5 pm to get their monthly or bi-weekly paycheck. You check in at the morning at your cubicle or at your job at the store and do your work. No matter how hard you work, you still get the same (low) pay every month and it just about covers your bills. You live from paycheck to paycheck, that is the general idea of life, right?
How good would it be if there was a different way to earn your money and to pay the bills. Perhaps even have some money left over for spending on something fun, such as holidays, new clothing or some equipment for the house. Or a luxurious car. Or saving up for a proper pension.
You go on the internet and type in something like passive income or make money online and many thousands of inviting websites want you to join the next big thing to make some easy cash online.
Passive Income Offers
It is not difficult to find any form of “easy” and “online” money sites claiming that you can work from home and passively earn yourself a living while you are sleeping in your bed to wake up to an inbox full of commission notifications.
Other sites promise you that you will be living at the coast and can earn your money, while enjoying the hot summer sun at the sea side. Gone are the days that you will need to work from the early hours to the late hours and sit for hours in traffic.
There are always the over-promising ones that show beaches and expensive cars and there are the less obnoxious ones being discreet at promising but still showing the numbers big earning potential to proof that it all works.
Between the many guru styled and over-promising or outright scamming sites, are also a couple of good legit offers that might very well lead you to your dreams, but how are you supposed to know that one. It can at least not be the ones that ask you to work more than 9 to 5, can it?
Passive Income Does Not Exist
I am very sorry to pop your bubble, but passive income does not really exist. For as far as the internet earning guru’s are not lying, they would at the very least have worked very hard on their online business for many years – and most likely still are.
A lot of the more over-promising sites are simply scamming you and there are also a bunch more sites that offer you just pennies for the amount of work you have to put aside, often against giving away a lot of privacy too.
Sure, the term passive income does exist and refers to that even when you are sleeping at night in your bed, the existing content might drive sales through affiliate offers that you promoted or through product sales through your web store.
Unfortunately though, the content you need to push and keep pushing out to your blog, vlog, social media etc, does not get there automatically. You will need to create all this content yourself and spread it over the media channels.
The amount you want to earn per month, depends on the quality and amount you lay out on the internet. The ones that are popular and indeed doing this successfully are definitely not spending all their time on the beach or driving around in their luxury car(s). They are spending time on building their content and spreading their word. They are spending lots of time on building their own personal brand and in creating awareness.
It is actually quite possible that you need to work far more than the usual 7.5 hours a day to get things really rolling. You might not get up at 9 to start your day and instead start at 10, but you might still be working at 2 am next day to get everything done. Most influencers are also building and publishing content on Saturdays and Sundays too.
Surely, there are those that spend money on content being created for them to publish them later. Unfortunately, also the content produced by others does cost quite some money which you do not have yet when you are just starting out. Until you got the money to pay for content, you might have to build stuff yourself first.
Most, if not all, business owners are doing something they absolutely love. There is so little point to run a business on something that isn’t sparking any joy for a person and it is very likely to fail at such a business. You don’t run a business just for the money, for that might quickly turn out to be a difficult thing to achieve. You should be running a business based upon something you truly love – a true passion. It will make things way easier when it comes down to the tough bits of business life.
A passion can be one of your many hobbies but it can also be something that fits your personal profile. Perhaps you are an excellent teacher or perhaps you just know a lot about cooking food or fishing Salmon. To know what your personal profile is like, you need to find yourself. The term for that is self-awareness.
There are many tools to find yourself, two of them I described in a post on Finding your true passion.
Passive Income Requires Hard Work
It is definitely possible to generate passive income, but it requires loads and loads of hard work. The passive income, as I mentioned before is based on what can come into your inbox while you are doing other stuff or working on the next piece of content.
Do not think however, that you can push out a bunch of content and then stop working on your site entirely for several weeks. Your site will definitely suffer if you do that. To play it smart, you might want to book one day in the week to write a lot of content and then schedule the posts to be published over time. Even though you have written all this content and need perhaps only 15 minutes to publish content to your platform and blast a bunch of links through social media, it usually doesn’t end there.
Apart from blog writing and keyword research, you will also have to work on your social media, spread the word of your content through forums, guest blogs, magazines and personal contact. You cannot really miss a day, for it will show in the results and statistics.
The key thing in online content creation is to keep at it with big regularity. It is key to use a schedule for launching posts, based upon day and time. It is also essential to be consequent in this. It is easier for your audience to know when to expect your next piece of awesome content. In the same way also a search engine such as Google will more likely rank you well when you post stuff regularly online.
Receiving all those affiliate commissions while you are sleeping, suddenly doesn’t sound as much passive anymore as you earlier thought, right?
