Do you love playing games or thinking of creating your own game? Did you know that you an make money with games, whether that is playing them, writing about them or publishing them? The platforms of YouTube and Twitch allow you to make money while playing games, as a game tester you will play games and earn money and as a game developer you can sell games.
Are you extremely good in playing video games? Are you a person who wants to help other gamers? There is the option to produce video’s for YouTube for you.
Gamers come to YouTube to:
- Find out how something is done in a game (advice, how-to guides)
- Reviews and previews of games
- complete play-through’s
Gamers really come to check out reviews and previews of games to determine whether they want to buy the game and play it as well. You can guide them into what the game features and how it is played as well as the possible future updates the developers will bring.
A lot of reviewers on YouTube receive free products from the manufacturers so that they can be reviewed by them.
Gamers often get stuck in the game they are playing and will go online to search for a solution for their problem. YouTube is nowadays ranked as search engine number two and gamers will naturally go there to find their next guide, advice, how-to guide or tips to the various game related problems.
It could be anything from configuring optimal graphics and audio settings towards something specific for the game they are playing that they need solving.
Show how it is done and help 1000s of players solve their various problems in-game.
There are also a great deal of people that enjoy seeing others play through a game. Not every player is as good or has the patience to play through a game themselves, that they prefer to watch others play games. Others do not like to play games themselves and rather watch someone else play a game.
As a gamer you can service the need for playthrough’s simply by playing your favourite game and answer questions (from previous video comments) along the way.
Streaming falls a bit under the previous playthrough’s market, but is a growing thing. Twitch.tv started with it and YouTube has now also a live streaming option.
Although it will be hard at first to get into this market, there are also here options to make money as a payment for the hard work and amounts of time invested into it. The main requirement is that you are an active streamer with a set schedule and following.
Streaming on Twitch is related mostly to gaming, but has in more recent years seen an update towards being able to stream different things in life as well, such as
- IRL (in real life)
- Talk Shows
- 24/7 broadcasting
Streaming on Twitch is more about the show you do with your audience than about playing the games themselves. Equally you could of course also just play the games and let the audience follow you on your playthrough journey through a game.
Your audience can be active in two ways however:
- helping you be better in a game
- getting advice and help from you for their gameplay
Streaming is extremely lucrative, especially when you are already a gamer by heart. Even though it is tough to get into it, it is being done by young and old and anyone in between.
Since Twitch is owned by Amazon, there are also many ways you can make money with your streaming business. Money can be made through:
- Twitch Subscriptions To Your Stream (50%)
- Twitch Bits (small cheer currency, 100%)
- Donations (Paypal takes a small cut, but otherwise it is yours to keep)
- Amazon Gear Links (you can use Amazon Affiliate links)
- Other Affiliate Links within stream and outside on the stream page.
As a game tester you would be testing games and getting paid for it. It’s not about beta testing like we can do for a lot of games lately, but it is about testing the same sequence in a game over and over again. Every test result has to be reported back.
How interesting it might sound, the reality of it isn’t anywhere near as fun. Game producers often hire in game testers for their services to test a certain thing in their game over and over and over again. Every week a new version is launched of the product and the tests will have to be performed again on the same thing.
Can you make money with it? Oh absolutely. It is a job and every job is paid. If you are extremely good at this, then you will be able to make good money with it too.
Game Producer / Developer
As a game producer or developer you develop games and publish them. When people buy your game, you make an income. It isn’t as easy as it sounds and producing a game requires a lot of creativity, money and special knowledge.
Producing a game is also something that will take a lot of time and when it is finally finished it might not be received well enough to make an income from it.
With that said, if you have the talents or at the very least the interest to create your own games and make a living from that, there are certainly possibilities for you.
If you are just very good at coming up with new concepts, you could try to join a team that wants to create their own game or start your own team and find either paid or free individuals that want to help you build this game from the blueprints.
To create a game you need minimal:
- an idea of what you are going to create
- a programmer that can create it
- someone that can produce your graphics
- software to build it with
- place where you will publish it
Okay, granted, that is perhaps a little short-sighted, but you get at least an idea in which direction this goes. There are indie developers out there that have produced their game entirely on their own, fulfilling each of the above roles in a proper game production team. It is definitely possible, but it won’t be easy.
I know, because I have been there done that, so to say. Or tried to at least. I was a project leader and creative director and tried to produce a game with a bunch of friends. It never became a sellable product, but it was really a great deal of fun at the time.
Had we managed to produce a proper game out of that, we would still have gotten difficulties selling it.
Producing a game requires a lot of initial investment (hours you used creating the product) before you eventually will see any money from it.
Website About Games
Alternatively you could start a website about games. There are many ways in which you can start a website and earn money with it:
- Gaming Magazine Website (for example news, reviews and previews of games)
- Specific Game Genre Website (for example: MMO’s, RPG’s, Sandbox, FPS, cardgames etc)
- Specific Game Website (for example: Minecraft)
- Webshop (selling games or game products)
The first thing you want to do is decide on a niche. When you have found your niche you will have to concentrate on producing the content for your site. Next up is getting traffic (through search engine optimization, social media, forums and perhaps even paid traffic) and when you finally got the traffic, you can monetize your website by promoting products that are part of affiliate programs.
It sounds perhaps complicated, but it can all be learned.
