A client of mine spoke to me last night and said, “I got myself a website and a domain and hosting, but what is next? How to get visitors to my website? My site is new and nobody knows about it yet.” Today I will go into the details on how to get visitors with free traffic.
How Many Sites Are On The Internet?
Every minute 70 new domains are being registered. Each and every minute on average 571 websites are being created. In this same minute, 347 or more blog posts are posted. On the positive side of things does amazon generate 83.000 USD of sales per minute. Something we want to have a share of, right?
But how will your website stand out in the crowd of over 1.3 Billion websites already up and running and 571 more websites being created each minute?
He who is not strong must be clever
We have to get smart to stand out in the crowd. In the next section I will show you my most popular methods to stand out in the crowd and get yourself some totally free traffic.
1. Own Family, Friends
I am sure you got your own family and friends and this should be your first place to look for traffic. This is usually the fastest way to get a lot of traffic. Friends and family are also the ones that want to support you in every way possible. Helping you out with checking out your content, commenting on your content and spreading the word is one of the best ways to increase traffic.
Your friends and family also have a wealth of contacts themselves and are your biggest ambassadors for traffic first-hand. If your niche is very specific, you will be able to spread the word about it to the interested family members and friends that will in their turn be willing to spread the word for you through their own channels – be it special interest groups or social media.
2. Use Social Media
The first thing you can do, and probably already do daily, is to be socially active in social media. You probably have a lot of friends through social media. They are not really friends, but they are contacts within a niche or several niches.
You follow them, you share stuff of each other. In the same way you can share them your site and share posts of your site. Get a following of people in your niche that interests themselves in it and want to read what you have to say about it.
This doesn’t mean that you should spam your website and posts to them, because that would just be annoying. But you can share one post a week at least and stay active in also commenting, liking and sharing their content. You can find content just like you would when you are writing posts and just post that content to them. You can share your researched content of others with them.
That way you build yourself a community and a very focused following.
In social media there are also often groups of like-minded people. You will find groups concerning your niche and if there is nothing yet, you can always start a new group yourself. Be active in these groups and share your knowledge. Show them that you are an authority or expert in your field. In due time people will be interested and read and learn what you have to share.
On Pinterest or Instagram it is about sharing info graphics and image material, while linking back to your website. On Facebook and Twitter you can link anything. Google Plus has also interest-groups. Linkedin is more for businesses, but can definitely be also right for you depend on your niche. There are many social media out there. Not being in social media at all means you are missing out on traffic.
Start with One
Go for one social media channel at a time. It is extremely difficult to go and keep up several social media channels at once. Build out one channel first, before you start on the next. It doesn’t suffice with just mass posting your links to all social media channels. Be an authority and show your expertise to everyone there.
3. Forums, QA Boards
Another great source for free traffic are the many forums and Question and Answer websites out there. Quora is a very big one in the field, but also Yahoo answers is very well-known.
Be an expert in your field and register yourself as a member of these places. Be active in answer people’s questions. Don’t do it all the time, but sometimes you definitely can link to your own websites’ content as a resource for the answer you are giving.
When there is in your eyes content missing, you have also the option to ask questions yourself. Perhaps you are wondering about something. The answers given can be a source for new content for your site or you could tactically give answers to your own questions as well.
Start again with only one or two of the available forums and QA boards. For example, start with one forum and one QA board and work your way up in those first, before approaching in the next. It will bring a lot of extra work which you need to find time for besides writing content for your site, so keep that in mind.
4. Make Search Engines Happy
There are a bunches of techniques to get the technical part in good working so that search engines will be happy with your content. It is important to have a fast website that is responsive and works for both mobile and desktop users. The website should be save (SSL) and contain quality content for your audience.
The technical side of the website should be build properly with a clear place for navigation and other important elements on the website.
You can Search Engine Optimize your content to further improve the chances of getting your site indexed. You should also become a webmaster of your site, using the Webmaster Tools of each search engine out there, so that you can send them some things that make them happy and index your content faster and easier (for example by linking a sitemap).
5. Rank Page One In Search Engines
How many people do you know that – when they are searching for something on the internet – go beyond page 5? I know a couple of people who do that, me included. Most of the time however, people do not even go beyond the first page! They see the first 10 results on any search engine as the best result for what they are looking for.
It baffles me to some extent that people trust their search engine that much, that they believe that the first 10 pages in the results are the best results for the thing you are looking for, but that is an entirely different discussion.
Long Tail Keywords
One way to gain ranking is by the use of so called long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are not by definition longer in the amount of keywords, but rather lower in popularity. When you rank page 1 for a lower popular keyword, you will gain traffic. Perhaps not a great amount of traffic, but at least a very specified amount of people that are looking for the thing that you rank for.
How To Get A Lot Of Traffic?
You can try to rank for 1 good keyword attracting 5000 visitors a month, but if you never get a page 1 ranking for that keyword, it won’t matter. You will never see that amount of traffic, if anything at all.
When you rank page one for a long tail keyword, you get perhaps 10 visitors a month. That doesn’t sound like much, but if you manage to rank page one for say 10 long tail keyword pages and each of them give you 10 visitors a month, you already gained 100 visitors per month.
So the trick is to find very specific keywords that are low in popularity that are easy to rank for and to base all your articles on that.
In fact, this is my main technique to get all my traffic for my websites. It simply works!
You can get a lot of easy and free traffic through family, friends, social media, special interest groups and QA boards and forums. There are other methods to gain visitors to your website. First of all you should optimize your website for search engines and deliver your sitemap to them.
To make it easier to rank in search engines, you should target keywords that are lower in popularity and have less competition. These keywords will be easy to rank for, while over time you will generate a lot of traffic through these posts.
