When you are starting a new online business, you need to find a niche you want to focus on. In this guide I will show you what a niche is and how to find a niche for a business so that you can become a successful entrepreneur and authority.
What Is A Niche?
A niche is simply said a segment of a market. This segment is typically an audience.
So a niche is a definition of the targeted:
- Theme or Topic
- Market or subset of the market
That sounds all very nice, but what does that really mean for you. Before you can start any business, you need to have an idea what sort of product or service you are going to produce and to which target audience you are going to sell this to.
It is a better idea to first find a need of a certain audience, before you start producing a product for it. What is the point to have a product that no one is interested buying? So businesses do market research and try to find a gap in the market that requires a new answer. They than develop a product for that gap and offer the market a solution to their problem or problems.
Here’s a video of Kyle at Wealthy Affiliate on the definition of a niche:
What Is Your Hobby or Passion?
For any sort of business that you would like to start you need to find a niche that fits you. A fitting niche should ideally be a topic that interests you most, just so that you would be willing enough to write a huge amount of articles for.
Perhaps it is your passion or a certain hobby. It doesn’t have to be something you know, because maybe it is something you want to become an expert in over time.
If you have no hobby or passion at all, there is perhaps a certain interest you would want to more time with. This interest could be something you have never done anything with, but you are willing to research the matter and learn more about.
You can trust me, with this method of finding a passion, your business is going to take off way quicker than when you are not motivated for it.
Take a look at below list of niche ideas. Perhaps it will put you on the right mindset to start thinking creatively in what sort of niche and business you want to delve to start this new adventure.
Here are some niche ideas/possible passions:
- Your pet type …
- Your country
- Your city
- Roller skating
- Skiing / any winter sports
- Body building
- Losing weight
- Making Money Online
This was just but a small selection of common passions, hobbies and sports that occupy us humans daily. All and any of these passions can be turned into a money making niche. Don’t believe me? check the next section.
Can You Make Money With A Passion?
In the marketing world we like to say:
You Can Make Money In Any Niche
This is simply because there is money to be made in virtually any niche you can think of. Any passion you have is most likely also a passion of someone else in the world. There are billions of people online every day searching for information, looking for solutions and spending huge amounts of money for all sorts of products and services.
If you are not sure yet, here’s something to check.
Say, your passion is “roller skating”. What could you possibly make money with in the niche of “roller skating”?
A very fast way of getting an overview of possible ways to earn is through a look at the one of the biggest sellers of products on the internet, namely Amazon.
Amazon is also one of the biggest owners of an affiliate partner program. You can promote any of their millions of products online and you earn a commission based on a percentage of the total sales done through you.
As you can see from the search on roller skating I get a bunch of products. These were just the actual roller skates that are selling in the price range of as low as 37 USD and as high as 202 USD. Next to reviewing all different types of roller skates or inline skates, you can also promote accessories such as safety equipment for the body parts as well as extra wheels and laces.
This was just one tiny example of a niche. Specifying this niche down, you could go towards roller skating for children or roller skating professionally and have another bunch of products and accessories for the entire niche.
Note that you don’t just have to go for the roller skates themselves, but you can also promote the books or training equipment. The screw driver set to fix them, the first aid kit to fix the person that falls and hurts themselves etc.
Next to Amazon you can check out Google to see how profitable your niche is going to be.
Search on Google for “niche + affiliate program”, like so:
This shows us that on roller skating, on the first page of google alone, there are 5 different affiliate programs which you can promote on your website about roller skating. They vary from roller skates themselves to a whole program and website based upon sport protection gear. That was just the first page, because according to Google there are at approximately 428.000 results for my search.
Another way of knowing that there is money to be made is when there are already websites established in the niche of choice. The fact that there are many people promoting niche X is because there is money to be made. Go and get it there too!
Too Broad? Dig Down Deeper
Okay you found your niche, but feel it is way too broad. There are way too many other sites in the field battling for the same sales and the topic has very many products to choose from to promote. What do I do next?
You dig down deeper into your niche. When you specify an audience for your niche, you will specify and dig deeper into the niche. When you specify a number of demographics, you will see that your niche becomes more specified. Fewer and fewer opponents will be battling for a position in the search results of popular search engines and more money is to be made.
Say you love to make clothing, you love knitting. Knitting is a huge niche. Knitting clothing is a very popular hobby for many, but it is going to pay off to dig down deeper on this niche. When you get more specific within your niche, you will find a plethora of options to monetize and still have a great amount of topics to talk about.
More specified niche ideas within the knitting niche:
- knitting baby clothes
- knitting clothes for kids (size)
- knitting clothes for kids (age range)
- knitting winter wear
- knitting carpets
- knitting blankets
- knitting with big needles
You get the picture. Perhaps my examples are still too broad, but I have too little expertise in these niches to say a proper word about them.
How To Be Sure About A Niche?
From the perspective of my coaching or of the many great marketing courses available, it is best to start with a passion for your niche. The approach of a profitable niche isn’t really as important, because doing research and writing for a niche that is going to really pay well, might not be as easy for a beginner.
This is why we teach you to take a passion to write for first. It will be far easier to get your business started. Over time, you might take the decision to start another website on a different niche or perhaps you get bored with what you started and start over with something else.
Whether you will start with something you love or with something you feel can be truly profitable, it can be a good idea to find out beforehand what will define a good niche. As such, I suggest that you research the following when choosing a niche:
- Will your website fill a need or market gap?
- Is there a lack of quality content on the topic?
- Can you write 100, 200, 500 articles in your niche the coming years?
- Are you willing to become an authority or expert in this niche?
- Any good affiliate programs?
Do keep in mind that writing about stuff that you have no knowledge about or have no ownership to (such as not owning the products you are promoting) can be a real big problem. It requires a different approach than when you write about something you have used for years.
Sometimes it involves investing time and money into a product to try it out, other times it means you have to do weeks of research on the internet to figure all the inns and outs of product out. It requires a great deal of patience and dedication to succeed with any such niche.
