A great way of starting with affiliate marketing is through writing reviews for products that are available at Amazon. After writing a review for a product, it is time to add Amazon affiliate links. In this guide I will show you how you can add Amazon affiliate links in WordPress, through the use of SiteStripe or plugins.
An Introduction To Amazon
Amazon started once upon a time as a book selling company and started as small as a garage. This company grew out to be the biggest one around and has now stores all over the world, shipping all over the world to millions of buyers.
Amazon As Affiliate Partner
Amazon has also an affiliate partner program for those interested promoting products for sale on Amazon and earning a commission.
The affiliate partner program called Amazon Associates has also changed a lot over the years. While it started with percentual upgrades in commission levels, now they have set static percentages per product category.
The big advantage of promoting Amazon products opposing other affiliate programs is because the immensely big amount of products you can buy on the site as well as the huge potential customers that do buy from this site.
When you refer a visitor to the Amazon website, they have a cookie on their PC saved for 24 hours. When this visitor buys something from the site within the 24 hours, you will earn a commission based upon the total shopping cart value and contents.
The commission structure has recently changed to a product category type. Each product within the shopping cart upon check-out counts towards the table below.
If a visitor buys a TV and a hair blower, you will earn 2% over the total cost of the TV and 4.5% over the total cost of the hair blower.
Note: you can send a visitor to buy a certain product, while they might stuff their shopping cart with more stuff or other stuff that you will get paid for as well. Pretty neat!
Linking Amazon Products
Development of Tools
A lot has changed at Amazon. Before we had the choice of using our own stores (Astores) that we would implement to our site. Then it went to getting links from Amazon directly to the products for each country. At some point people started making all sorts of plugins that automated the process of finding country specific links and now Amazon has come with their own set of plugins, such as Amazon Link Builder. Amazon OneLink, developed recently, replaces the link translating plugins. Astores was replaced by Native Ads.
Amazon is a very thriving company and they will continue improving their services to better suit the customer needs and they also keep improving the tools that make us promote their stores.
Amazon also replaced some of these plugin functions by adding Amazon OneLink, a system that automatically finds the right link for the localized version of the Amazon store for each visitor. The latter suits both the customers need and the associate in the commission of the right store.
It is pretty complicated to explain, but it comes down to that when a visitor clicks on an amazon.com product link, the OneLink makes sure that the visitor will be redirected to the right store if he for example lives in the UK, while you will still be able to earn a commission through the Amazon Associate account you have created for each of the Amazon stores.
Amazon SiteStripe is a system that they added only in the last 2-3 years to make creating links to products a lot easier. Before you had to login to the Associate website and find each product to create links for them.
Amazon Associates Programs
If you are not an Amazon Associate yet, you need to sign up for the program for each of the country specific websites you want to advertise for. If your website is targeting USA customers, you need an account for amazon.com associates program.
You can link multiple programs together using the Amazon OneLink system.
- Brazil – https://associados.amazon.com.br/
- Canada- https://associates.amazon.ca/
- China – https://associates.amazon.cn/
- France – http://partenaires.amazon.fr/
- Germany – https://partnernet.amazon.de/
- India – http://affiliate-program.amazon.in/
- Italy – https://programma-affiliazione.amazon.it/
- Japan – https://affiliate.amazon.co.jp/

- Spain – https://afiliados.amazon.es/
- United Kingdom – https://affiliate-program.amazon.co.uk/

For Amazon OneLink you need an Amazon Associates Account for each of the local stores as shown above.

- Add OneLink code to your websites’ footer
- Add Product links using SiteStripe (described in this guide)
Amazon OneLink Resources:
Amazon Link Builder
Amazon Link Builder is a plugin that is developed for Amazon and is featured on their own website. There are a couple more plugins featured through Amazon. The plugins allow you to easily find products and link them to your content. The plugins often come also with extra functionality such as prices or comparison tables.
The Amazon Link Builder Plugin for WordPress can be downloaded through your Dashboard.
Plugins – Add Plugin – Search for Amazon Link Builder and install & activate the plugin.
The Amazon Link Builder has a script within the plugin that recognizes short codes it generates for the linking of products.
It also adds an icon to your Visual WordPress editor for Posts and Pages with which you can add the various offered product linking. This tutorial will not go into the details on that. I might write a review about this plugin at a later point in time.
Do understand that this adds yet another Plugin to your website and plugin count. Too many plugins can slow down your website.
Amazon Link Builder Resources:
If you don’t want to install any plugins to your site and just want to link basic links and images from Amazon to your site, your best option is Amazon SiteStripe.
Amazon SiteStripe is a tool bar in the top of the main shopping page of Amazon and is visible when you are logged in with your Amazon Associates account.
This bar is only visible when you are logged in with your Associate Account.
Login With The Right Account
To switch accounts or to logout, Hover with your mouse over Hello, *name* and click in the unfolding menu:
At the top it says Hello, *name* with Account & Lists below it. If you happen to have two accounts, one for buying stuff and one for your associates, be sure to Sign Out or Switch Accounts to the right account for affiliate link building.
If it doesn’t say your name, you are not logged in. Instead, it will Say: Hello, Sign in.
Hover with your mouse-cursor over the Hello, sign in and the below menu will open. Click now on the Sign in button and sign into your Amazon Associates account.
If you do not have an Amazon Associates account yet, you need to sign up for the program first before you continue with this tutorial.
SiteStripe offers the following types of Affiliate Links:
- text link
- image (+link)
- text & image (+link)
- Native shopping ads
Even though it also shows options to share directly on Facebook and Twitter, I believe social media are no longer all too fond of linking affiliate links directly on their platforms. The best method is to have your website post with links and link on social media towards those posts.
On above image I didn’t start searching yet. Type something there to start searching. Therefore, only Text link is activated.
This means that you can even put up referral links to:
- the main page,
- department pages
- Best selling pages
In other words, your affiliate links are not required to be to only a single product. Very nice to use that when someone for example asks in the comments section of your post about a tool that was not part of the review. You can then link an entire category to answer the question and redirect them to where they could buy such a tool.
You can search for any product that you want to place affiliate links for on your post, but I am going here for a book about WordPress Themes. I found a book that teaches me how to create my own WordPress Themes from scratch.
- I searched for “wordpress theme” in the search bar of Amazon.com
- I had a list of results and chose a book Building a WordPress Theme (clicked upon)
- The Amazon SiteStripe bar changed, now text, image, text+image and native shopping ads (custom) have become active.
Adding A Text Link For Amazon Products
The text links come as URL’s and the other ones come as HTML code.
Text links can be used directly within the linking interface of your editor, while HTML code needs to be added through the text or HTML editor of your post editor.
To get your WordPress editor to show the HTML version, there is a small tab to click on the right-hand side. Click on visual for the visual version or what you see is what you get version, while clicking on text will show you the HTML Code behind your content within a page or post.
First we need to grab the link from Amazon SiteStripe. The process is in big lines exactly the same as what I describe below.
- Click under Get Link on Text (Optionally change tracking ID)
- Optionally click short or full link
- Copy the generated URL
- Go to your post or page you want to link it and select the text you want to link towards (such as buy now)
- Click link button
- Paste URL and press <enter>.
With a piece of text selected, press the link or paperclip icon (5) to make a new link on the selected text.
Up comes a window where you can paste (5) your copied link into (CTRL-V or Command-V). Alternatively you can press right mouse button within the paste link here of the window and select paste from the menu.
Now you can press the or key on your keyboard or click the blue “apply” icon.
Adding Image, Text+Image & Native Shopping Ads
When you want to add the other types (image, text+image and the native shopping ads) Amazon SiteStripe generates a code in HTML format that you need to paste inside the HTML view of your site. You get there by clicking o the Text tab. To get back again to what you are used to writing into, you click again on Visual.
While in Text mode you will see all the HTML there. Find the right location where you want to have the image or ad and paste (CTRL-V) or right click paste the code into your HTML.
After switching back to visual it should show something within the editor. This view doesn’t always show correctly, but after saving and previewing, you should be able to see the added code properly.
