When you want to start your online business, the first thing that should come to mind is to build a website for your business.
To build a website there are a couple of things you will need to do. Your website needs to be available at all times from wherever someone is in the world. You will need an address that people can use and remember to get to your website and you will need to build the actual site. When the site is built, you can also start writing content on the site.
You will need to:
- Get a hosting
- Register a domain
- Install a CMS
- Build out your content
When I started creating websites for myself and for customers I did so from scratch. I learned the coding behind websites and created first simple websites in HTML. Later on I learned database languages and programming languages for more advanced functionality. I programmed professional websites for big customers. From simple service sites to more advanced database centered websites and complete community systems such as forums, shops and interactive systems.
Nowadays, things are way easier. Building a website is a matter of clicking a few buttons and your site is operational. But it might still sound like algebra to you, so here I will lead you through the three quick and easy steps.
Step 1 – Get A Hosting
First of all you need a place to put the website. This cannot just be on your PC, because you want your website to be available at all times for all sorts of people that are on the internet. The place to put a website is called a hosting. Hosting comes in all forms and shapes. Big providers advertise everywhere and you will find both cheap and expensive solutions. It is however pretty difficult to figure out what you need if you never have done anything within website building.
I got most of my websites hosted with Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate has a hosting platform named SiteRubix. SiteRubix is a three-step build a website system. It is super fast and reliable and offers exactly what you need to start online. Best of it all is that you can start for free. But before you go ahead, there is one key element you also need and that is a domain.
Hosting is charged for by hosting companies and it can be charged either monthly or yearly.
Step 2 – Register a Domain
Your fantastic website should also be found by your visitors. For this you need a domain name (or sub domain).
The internet is a giant network of computers. Even when you connect to the internet with your PC or your telephone, you are also part of that big network. Websites are hosted on a hosting PC. These special PC’s are public to everyone on the network. Every website needs a unique domain name. The PC that hosts your website is addressed to with a special number, just like the house number on your house.
For example: 188.8.131.52 is an example of an address to a website one such PC.
But those numbers with dots in between are difficult for anyone to remember. That’s where domain names come into place. The above example number is actually the number behind the domain name google.com.
A domain name is build up by a custom name and an extension. The extension tells us whether it is from a certain country (for example .nl for Netherlands, .de for Germany, .co.uk for United Kingdom etc) or whether it is a company (.com) or organisation (.org). A lot of different and new extensions become available every year, because the internet keeps growing and growing and more addresses are needed.
Domain names are registered through a special database where all the domain names are stored. Every website has its own unique domain name, so that the address only leads to one website. A domain name is registered through a registrar. You pay a yearly fee to keep the name registered for your website. Your website hosting might offer the option to register a domain name. That way you pay for both in one place and can manage both in the same place.
Many domains are already registered, so it might take some time to find the right domain name for your site. Know that when the domain name for one extension already is registered, that there there is a possibility for other extensions to be available for your chosen domain name.
Alternatively you can start with a free website. Your website will then be reachable through an address of an existing domain, such as <yourdomainname>.<existingdomain> .
Step 3 – Install A CMS
I told you earlier on in this article that I used to code my own websites. I programmed sites line by line and tag by tag. It was a lot of work and took a lot of time. Whenever I had to change something, I had to change it on many places. I also programmed more advanced websites. Programming websites is for advanced functionality and experienced people.
Luckily time has changed and a lot of development has been done for websites. Nowadays you can create a website with ease using the many advanced Content Management Systems (CMS) out there. One of the most popular systems is WordPress. You might have heard about it before. Most website hosting companies offer one-click WordPress installations. With WordPress installed on your website you can login to a dashboard and create the content of your site.
I have most of my websites hosted at Wealthy Affiliate.
At Wealthy Affiliate they have WordPress and it is automatically installed when you create your website. WordPress is an extensive content management system that offers you a way to create your website easily. Whether you have products and services you want to tell your audience about or are trying to build a weblog it is all possible from within the same WordPress system. WordPress is open source and so it gets developed continuously by a supportive community.
You can start a free WordPress hosting right here:
Wealthy Affiliate uses a webhosting platform named SiteRubix. At SiteRubix you can also create your website for free and start right away creating awesome content. SiteRubix is part of Wealthy Affiliate, a platform for learning about Affiliate Marketing and you can host several WordPress websites for free.
When you have built your site out and are happy about it, you can register your own domain name later and move all your site content you have built out by the press of a button. So what are you waiting for?
The above free website builder will ask you for a name of your site. When you click build it now, you will also have to choose a theme. Before you can do that you might have to register for an account. As SiteRubix is part of Wealthy Affiliate, you will need to create an account to start your new free website.
And you know what is great? I am also there! I can help you build your website and support you all the way. See you on the other side!
Now that you got your hosting, domain name (or free siterubix.com website) and your CMS sorted, you can start creating content. The content should be Search Engine Optimized (SEO). This means that your content can be easily read by a search engine and will be optimally indexed to be found by your audience.
You can create content within WordPress in a number of ways.
The second option that you have within WordPress is using the blogroll. This is done through the option Posts. Posts will be displayed with a date and a time and the author of the article. Posts can be categorized with a category option and you can add tags as well.
WordPress also offers the option to add more functionality to your site through the use of Plugins. The WordPress community has a thousands of plugins available for free to install on your site.
When you are not happy with the chosen theme, you can change the theme easily. And for navigation you need to make a menu. All this and more I will explain in a separate article.
On this website you will find more information on the creation of websites and how to make money with it.
